Lira Uganda, October 2009

Lifewater has worked with 'Divine Waters' since 1995 to help with drilling, biosand filtration and hygiene training of this partner who is recognized by his government as a true blessing to many.  Rod will be the lead trainer as they are given intermediate training in Pump Repair in Lira, Uganda.  This country is 70%-80% Christian and war free except for incursion of the Lord's Resistance Army from a neighboring country which terrorized and displaced many inhabitants for the past several years, finally having been driven out.  Many wells are broken and in need of repair.

Maputo, Mozambique, Jan 6 - Feb 2, 2009
Rod was part of a team working with partners "Agua Para Todos" in Mozambique who, in addition to Providing "Living Water" to their countrymen, also drill wells and repair pumps as well as provide hygiene training.  Rod helped train their pump repair team and drilling team in advanced techniques to help them better achieve the goal of providing safe water to so many without access to it.  A follow-up final trip is planned in the future to give them to most advanced training.

Awassa and Jima, Ethiopia Oct18-Nov16, 2007
Rod led a team to Ethiopia where teams from 6 synods of the Mekane Yesus Church were trained in transformational community development and pump repair. Kevin Sherman from Tennessee and Fred Proby from San Luis Obispo were also on the team. The trainees were equipped with tools also which will allow them to repair the many broken wells in their regions. Villagers with broken wells have to walk long distances just to get a bucket of often contaminated water.  In a subsequent trip in 2008, the teams were both given intermediate training along with additional tools. Blessings from the Ethiopia Project Trip

NDOLA, ZAMBIA - May 20-June 8, 2007
Rod joins a team of cable-tool drillers and biosand trainers to train Zambian nationals in those skills. All water and sanitation training is in concert with "Community Health Through Hygiene" classes. Safe water, alone, decreases the mortality rate 16% while adding Hygiene training increases this to 35%. Adding Sanitation to this decreases the mortality rate to 40% (World Health Org). Lifewater strives to help bring about lasting and sustainable improvement in the quality of life in developing countries. Lifewater newsletter on Uganda

UGANDA/KENYA - October 14- November 4, 2006
Rod completed another project As a Lead trainer to Nakuru, Kenya to train a local team to make Biosand filters using one of the molds Phil Walker, John Sedlak and he make in Upper Ojai and ship around the world. Each completed filter costs $30-$35 and can provide an extended family of 15 with 98%-99.9% safe water for a lifetime with no further expense. Some of your contributions would be used to help locals who cannot pay all of the cost to purchase their own filter.

TIBETAN PLATEAU,CHINA: On a previous project, Rod and John returned from Xining, China to survey Cable Tool Drilling and teach community health trainers from Jul 22 - August 6, 2004. Rod led a team back to China to do in-depth drill training June 2005 and they are continuing to provide safe water wells. June/July 2006, Rod led a team to another area on the plateau to teach advanced drill training to drill teams.

SIERRA LEONE: A Pump Repair Training trip was completed in Sierra Leone Feb 5th-March 1st, 2005. Rod led the repair trainers as they trained teams to repair water wells in this region devastated by an 11 year civil war which ended 2001. The child mortality rate is among the highest in the world (257/1000)- mostly due to bad water. The situation is correctable with training, small amounts of funding and equipping of local teams who will repair the estimated 50% of wells not working. They can make a big difference in regional health quality for years to come.

A second trip taught bio-sand filters in January 2006 which provided appropriate technology for a sustainable enterprise which makes home filters for the very poor that remove almost all of the harmful pathogens in their polluted water supplies. The team can make enough filters to provide an additional 3,000 people each year with safe water.

UGANDA - Feb 1 - 21, 2007

Rod led a team of biosand and pump repair trainers to Lira, Uganda. 19 biosand technicians and 19 pump repair technicians were trained and equipped to provide sources of safe water in5 northern districts of Uganda. This will result in thousands having access to safe water (some for the first time) for the rest of their lives as a result of your support.
