November 20th worship service

Christ the King Sunday

It has taken 22 Sundays but we have finally reached the end of the churches Ordinary Time, that period between Pentecost and the start of the new church with Advent.

What has happened is that the last Sunday in Ordinary Time is called Christ the King Sunday.  The Church Calendar works us through the Christian year.  It starts with anticipating Christ’s birth with Advent.  Celebrating the Birth with Christmas.  The awareness and recognition by the world with Epiphany.  The preparation for and the ultimate sacrifice with Lent.  The resurrection with Easter and the 40 days Jesus was with the Disciples and finally the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.  And Ordinary Time takes us through Jesus’ life and teaching, but ends with the recognition and celebration of the returning King.

1Thessalonians 4:16  For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the Armistice with Germany put and end to World War I and laid the foundation for Veteran’s Day.  A day in which we pay tribute to all the veterans who served in our military.  President Woodrow Wilson remembered the day on November 11th 1919 with a letter to the United States.  On June 4th 1926 Congress adopted a resolution calling for annual ceremonies.  And on May 13th 1938 November 11th was adopted as the official day for Armistice Day.  On May 26th 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day.

We have a proud history, and for all the seeming havoc going on in the world today we have remained a stronghold for democracy and rule of law.  Our existence as a nation has been possible only because we have literally millions of men and women prepared to serve when needed.  Today is the last day of Veterans Day weekend.  Say a prayer of thanks to those who have served.

Ordinary time 2022

that period from the end of Easter to Christ the King Sunday

Following Pentecost on June 5th we entered into the final season of the Christian Calendar.  In 2022 this runs from June 12th until the first Sunday of Advent on November 27th when the Christian Year starts.  After rushing through the events leading up to the birth of the Christ Child (Advent), the celebrations of Christmas, the time of manifestation and awareness during Epiphany, the time of meditation during Lent, and finally the triumphs of the Easter resurrection ending with the gift of the Holy Spirit we now have a time of contemplation, learning and review as we figure out what these season mean.
